During the Investment Grade Audit, ESP identified energy cost savings measures
and provided solutions at a much lower cost than their competitors. In fact, ESP
provided a better technical and financial package saving the district over two
million dollars. In a very competitive selection process, ESP stood out as Bonner
Springs’s best choice for some of the following reasons:
  - As a vendor independent company, they focus on finding solutions to facility
needs rather than on selling equipment.
  - Local area businesses were engaged when possible and practical.
  - They have project experience in K-12 and higher education settings and
personnel with education background experience which gives them a deep
understanding of educational environment needs.
  - As a small business they have lower overhead expenses and profit margins
resulting in an overall better value for the district.

Background

Covering 42 square miles, Bonner Springs School District is located on the western edge of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, and primarily serves the cities of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville, KS, along with certain unincorporated areas of western Wyandotte and southeastern Leavenworth County. The district has over 2,600 students and over 400 personnel.

Challenge

Voters approved a bond issue that targeted new construction and the renovation of existing buildings in order to improve the overall education environment for students and teachers. One of the top needs for the district was the installation of air-conditioning before the start of the 2018-2019 school year. One of the complicating factors for all the work was that the new construction and renovation work would need to be completed in parallel.

Solution

ESP proposed and installed new variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heating and cooling at the high school, replacing a dated hot water/chilled water system. Other energy-saving measures include LED lighting; water-saving plumbing fixtures; weatherization of doors, windows, and roof/wall joints; additions and enhancements to building controls; ventilation improvements; HVAC replacements; and energy conservation training.

Benefits

Installation of the the new VRF air conditioning at the high school was completed before the start of the school year, allowing students and faculty to come back to cool classrooms after summer break. Better controls, lighting, ventilation and a reduction in outdoor air infiltration have all improved the classroom environment. Becasue of the improvements, the district is saving over $170,000 anually.
