Controls Specialist

Energy Solutions Professionals (ESP) is a Kansas City area based firm that specializes in helping clients reduce their utility costs by addressing and changing the way clients use energy in three key areas: supply, facilities/systems, and human behavior. Clients include colleges and universities, school districts, state and local government, hospitals, and commercial properties.

The Controls Specialist generally participates in a variety of project activities, including meetings, reviews, site visits, document production, system troubleshooting and field activities. This position typically supports Project Managers, Energy Engineers and Construction Managers; and may coordinate activities with clients and subcontractors. The Controls Specialist generally has a minimum of 3 years’ experience in the building automation/controls industry, basic knowledge of HVAC equipment/systems and good communication skills. 

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings for planning, scheduling, coordination, reviews, commissioning and training of O&M staff 
  • Effectively analyze current client systems; participate in the energy audit by taking field measurements of system performance; supports the Energy Engineer during the audit by investigating systems in the field, and accurately document measurements/findings.
  • Participate in EMS/Controls scope development for energy projects.  This will include developing request for proposal documents for subcontractor bids and participating in contractor site walks during the bidding process.
  • Participate in reviews of design documents, submittals, reports and O&M strategies for completeness, accuracy and effectiveness 
  • Participate in site visits for system/facility assessment, system functionality assessment, energy efficiency evaluation, installation review, witnessing startup, witnessing contractor testing/demonstration and commissioning testing 
  • Participate in tasks of research, data collection, data analysis and cost estimation 
  • Participate in development of checklists, test procedures, reports and presentations 
  • Participate in troubleshooting, diagnostics and solution development 
  • Direct support staff, subcontractors and contractors in system testing and other appropriate activities
  • Support the onsite Construction Manager with controls related scopes; develop punch list; perform site installation inspections during construction identifying issues and best practices. 
  • Take direction from and assist designated Project Manager; document work and communicate results and recommendations 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with ESP staff, clients and subcontractors.
  • Organize and manage project documentation 
  • Responsible for meeting internal and external deadlines 

Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience in at least one of the following: testing, adjusting and balancing; controls; MEP and control system design; energy auditing; commissioning; retro-commissioning; and/or construction 
  • Prefer factory certification in one of the major control system vendors
  • Basic understanding of common HVAC, central plant and control systems 
  • Basic understanding of sustainability, energy management principals and energy efficiency strategies 
  • Proven problem-solving ability 
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Ability to navigate and research on Internet 
  • Good analytical, organizational and planning abilities 
  • Good communication skills, oral and written 
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a project team 
  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions 
  • Ability to take direction from clients, management and co-workers 
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people 
  • Ability to prioritize workload based on deadlines,  and to participate in multiple concurrent projects 
  • Ability to travel (local and out-of-state), including multi-day travel, as needed (10-15%)
  • Ability to work overtime hours as needed 
  • Proficient in the use of tools required for this position, which include but are not limited to the following:  standard office equipment, field test equipment such as meters, hand tools, data-logging equipment, etc.
  • Physical ability to perform field tasks in existing buildings and on construction sites 

Desired

  • Associates degree in relevant technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Relevant technical certifications

Physical Abilities

The work environment characteristics and physical demands described are representative of those an employee may encounter in a normal office setting and a construction work site. The work environment of a typical office environment requires sitting for long periods of time, working with computers and other office equipment. The work environment for a construction site visit is physically active and may require significant amounts of standing, walking, squatting, stooping, reaching and climbing (i.e. ladders) in the field. Field work will require employee to have mobility, a good sense of balance and manual dexterity.

Energy Engineer

Clients include colleges and universities, school districts, state and local governments, hospitals, and commercial properties.  

The Energy Engineer designs and develops energy savings solutions installed as part of an energy conservation project, including:  

  • Collecting and evaluating field data
  • Installing data logging devices and performing measurements as needed
  • Analyzing utility and field data to complete energy models
  • Performing saving calculations for energy conservation measures
  • Developing conceptual design and scope for energy saving solutions
  • Evaluating and approving equipment and design submittals
  • Evaluating the energy saving impacts of any scope changes during a project
  • Coordinating walkthroughs to obtain pricing from contractors and equipment suppliers
  • Providing technical write-ups and descriptions
  • Evaluating and reconciling measurements to determine savings achieved on projects

This role also provides support to multiple internal teams: business development, marketing, project and construction management, and energy conservation trainers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (preferably Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering)
  • PE license is preferable.
  • A minimum of three years of experience
  • Working knowledge of a wide variety of energy-saving solutions, as well as a solid understanding of the range of existing equipment/systems typically found in client facilities.
  • Excellent analytical skills to organize data and material to draw appropriate conclusions and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Skill collecting information, analyzing results to identify patterns, developing logical and objective conclusions, delineating implications and framing recommendations.
  • Solid written and oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of client staff.
  • Competent and comfortable using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) and other programs as required.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport, professional credibility and cooperative working relationships among all levels of a client organization.
  • Ability to work independently, be proactive, and deal with ambiguity.
  • Any industry certifications and/or qualifications are a plus (CEM, CMVP, LEED, etc.)
